How to Stop Nosebleeds Fast

Nosebleeds are relatively common occurrences that usually resolve quickly with basic first aid, not requiring a doctor's attention. There are, however, special circumstances that would require you to seek medical attention. These include if you're taking blood thinners, if the nosebleed is the result of trauma to the face, if the bleeding doesn't stop after 20 minutes of pressure or if you get nosebleeds more than once a week.

Step 1

Sit up straight and lean forward slightly to keep the blood from running down your throat. Always keep your head above your heart level, as this helps reduce the blood pressure in the vessels of your nose and thus lessens the bleeding.

Step 2

Pinch your nostrils closed between your thumb and index finger. Press just enough to flatten and close your nostrils, not so hard that it hurts. If only one nostril is bleeding, fold your fingers back and press your upright thumb against the nostril on that side, flattening it.

Step 3

Maintain steady pressure on the bleeding nostril or nostrils for 5 to 10 minutes, until the bleeding stops.

Tips and Warnings

  • Take a few deep breaths, if necessary, to keep calm. Some people are easily distressed by the sight of blood. To reduce the recurrence of nosebleeds, don't pick your nose or blow it for several hours after the bleeding has stopped. Stay upright, with your head higher than your heart, if at all possible.
