Foot odor can create many social disturbances within your life that simply are not necessary, given how easy it is to control it. If nothing has worked so far and the problem will not go away, you can try a few techniques to help you get this embarrassing situation back under control.

Step 1

Change your socks often. At the very least, change them daily. Your socks absorb sweat and odors. It is important to make sure you are wearing clean ones all the time. Opt for soft cotton socks that allow your feet to get some air circulating through them. If your feet sweat throughout the day, consider carrying an extra pair on you and changing them halfway through the day.

Step 2

Wash your feet with an antibacterial soap. It is not the sweat that makes your feet smell, but the bacteria that mixes with it. Eliminating the bacteria will go a long way in scaling back the odor. Wash your feet at least twice daily. Rinse them well with warm water. Use a clean absorbent towel to dry your feet off completely before you put on your socks.

Step 3

Rub antiperspirant on the soles of your feet to help reduce sweating and ultimately the odor that comes with it. Antiperspirant is not a long-term solution, but it can help. Long-term use may begin to aggravate the skin. Wash it off immediately if you experience any pain or discomfort from using it. A safer and more natural approach is to dust your feet with baking soda or baby powder to keep your feet dry before you put your socks on each day.

Step 4

Soak your feet every night in warm water. Add two to three herbal tea bags or baking soda to help kill odors. Allow your feet to soak for at least 15 minutes per day will also help improve your circulation.

Step 5

Take every opportunity to free your feet from the confines of socks and shoes, and go barefoot. Make time while you are watching television or reading a book to kick off your shoes and relax. This will help to air your feet out.

Tips and Warnings

  • If odors persist and nothing seems to help, consult with your doctor or a podiatrist to find the possible causes and potential cures for foot odor. If your socks have picked up the odor, and you can't seem to get rid of it, add 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle when you wash them to help eliminate the smell.
