Long hair may be attractive, but it takes patience and special treatment to grow a healthy head of long beautiful hair, report stylists at the Long Locks website. You have to make a commitment to take certain steps and stick with the process to grow your hair long. By taking the right precautions and making an effort to avoid damaging habits, you can grow your hair long and enjoy it in the process.
Step 1
Cut off damaged hair. Split ends and damaged hair can run up the length of each hair and damage the root follicle. Keep the ends trimmed on a regular basis to avoid damage at the root. Cut off about a half-inch every month with very sharp scissors that won't cause additional damage.
Step 2
Wash with gentle shampoos that use natural ingredients. Chemicals can dry out hair and cause it to fall out prematurely. Use a conditioner even if you have oily hair because conditioner helps the cuticles to lie flat and seals in natural moisture.
Step 3
Allow your hair to air dry whenever you can. Heat from any source, such as hair dryers and curling irons, damages hair. Use ceramic hot rollers if you must use a heat-based curling method. Protect your hair with heat-sensitive products if you use hot rollers.
Step 4
Use organic hair color if you must dye your hair. Avoid color that has peroxide or other harsh chemicals in it. Try color that's made form 100 percent henna that is available in a variety of colors.
Step 5
Squeeze the water out of your hair after shampooing instead of rubbing it dry. Hair is most delicate when it's wet and should not be combed or brushed when wet.
Step 6
Remove all the knots from your hair with a wide-tooth comb before washing. Comb your hair in small sections, starting at the top and working gently down to the ends. Use a smooth, molded comb and make sure it doesn't have any rough edges that can rip hair out.
Step 7
Sleep with your hair tied up in a scrunchie or other safe hair holder or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Hair can become damaged and pulled out from tossing and turning in bed. Wear your hair up or in loose braids whenever possible to avoid getting it caught on things and exposing it to stress of any kind.
Tips and Warnings
- Wash your growing hair with just conditioner every once in a while, especially if you wash it every day. The conditioner will wash off surface debris and give your hair a break from the harsher ingredients in shampoo.
- Don't use metal hair clips or jewelry that can break hair. Don't use any clips that have sharp edges and never use a rubber band to tie your hair back.
