After you have removed your artificial nails, your nails may be thin and brittle. If you decide to not put a new set of acrylics on the nails, you will want to take steps to improve their appearance. The nails become damaged due to the adhesive applied to hold the acrylics. It may take a few weeks to repair your nails; during that time, treat your nails gently to avoid breakage.

Step 1

Wear gloves as often as possible to protect your nails. This can prevent you from biting or pulling at the nails. Wear gloves when handling any substances that can damage the nails, like household cleaners.

Step 2

Take a biotin vitamin supplement, which may help strengthen your damaged nails. Recommended allowances for an adult is between 30 and 100mcg. Biotin is available over the counter and can be purchased from nutritional supply stores or drugstores.

Step 3

Apply a cuticle cream after washing your hands. Rub a generous amount of cuticle cream into your nail beds and surrounding skin at least twice a day to help condition your nails and cuticles.

Step 4

Use nail polish to protect and strengthen the thin and brittle nails. If you don't want a color polish, apply one to two clear coats.

Step 5

Protect your nails with a growth treatment. Your base coat and top coat should contain a protective strengthening agent. The base coat will add strength, while the top coat is intended to prevent the polish from cracking or chipping. One product you can try is Nail Aid. Reapply the treatment every three to five days to improve the nails.
