Hockey tape should be one of the items found in your hockey bag at all times. It can be used on your stick to protect it or give you better handling with the puck, and it can be applied to some of your equipment to make it more secure and functional. While there are a variety of colored hockey tapes available, most hockey players prefer black, as it better camouflages the puck when handling. Use hockey tape to improve your game and keep it on hand for quick fixes when in the game.

Step 1

Create a "knob" at the top of your hockey stick to prevent it from sliding down when you're wearing bulky hockey gloves. You can accomplish this by taping several layers of tape around the first inch of the stick handle. Each player prefers his hockey stick knob to be a different size, so it may take a few games to adjust the size to something you're most comfortable with.

Step 2

Tape the handle of your stick to give it better grip when playing. One popular technique is to tear off a foot-long piece of hockey tape and twist it into a thin rope. Wrap the rope around the hockey stick diagonally, then add a layer of flat hockey tape over top to secure it to the stick. This way you have a raised grip to hang onto your stick with.

Step 3

Wrap hockey tape around the blade of your stick to give better handling and to protect your stick from the penetration of excess moisture from the snow and ice on the rink. Start at the heel of your stick and tape a flat layer around the blade, taking care to smooth out any bubbles in the tape for the best grip possible. Stop an inch from the toe of your stick.

Step 4

Use your tape to keep your shin guards in place while playing. When you put your shin guards on, tape one layer around your shin guard and leg, sticking the tape firmly to your socks. This will make your shin guards a better fit, resulting in a more comfortable experience and less adjusting on the ice.
