Fitted caps are custom sized to fit certain sizes of heads. They are not adjustable, which can make it difficult for someone who has a head size between the fitted-cap sizes. Even small differences, including hair growth or loss, can change how a fitted cap fits. Shrinking a fitted cap is simple and can provide a customized fit.
Step 1
Use the spray bottle filled with water to get the cap wet. Do not soak the hat but apply a light coating of water on the body of the cap that fits around the head. Spray both the inside and outside of the hat. There is no need to spray the bill, as it does not need to shrink. Focus on spraying the inside inner band that fits around the head. This is the piece that determines how the cap will fit.
Step 2
Put the hair dryer on medium and rotate it around the cap until the cap is nearly dry. Keep the hair dryer about 12 inches from the cap, and evenly dry the cap for about five to 10 minutes. Point the hair dryer evenly on the inner band.
Step 3
Put the cap on your head to finish drying and form to the individual shape of your head.
Tips and Warnings
- Repeat the process as needed until the desired fit is achieved.
- Be aware of the hair dryer temperature to prevent burning the cap. Only use this method on caps made of 100 percent wool.
