Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes itchy, flaking skin that falls into the hair and onto the shoulders. Dandruff that is mild can be treated with over-the-counter shampoos. If your dandruff does not get better using an over-the-counter treatment, you may require a stronger, prescription shampoo. Although dandruff is a persistent condition, the right treatment can make dandruff a thing of the past.
Step 1
Shampoo your hair more often. If you have an oily scalp, the Mayo Clinic recommends shampooing often to prevent dandruff. Shampoo your hair every day or every other day to keep your scalp oil-free.
Step 2
Scrub your hair with a shampoo containing zinc pyrithione. Zinc pyrithone is the active ingredient in a variety of over-the-counter dandruff shampoos available at drugstores and grocery stores. For best results, wash your hair once a day with a shampoo containing zinc pyrithone.
Step 3
Expose your locks to the sun. According to the Mayo Clinic, sun exposure may help prevent dandruff. Because too much sun exposure can also cause skin conditions, like excess pigmentation, wrinkles and skin cancer, the Mayo Clinic does not recommend sunbathing.
Step 4
Style your hair without all the products. Hair products, like hairspray, mousse or hair gel can make dandruff worse. If you must use a hair product, apply it only to the ends of your hair.
Step 5
Consult a dermatologist for a prescription dandruff treatment. Your dermatologist may prescribe shampoos that contain ketoconazole, salicylic acid or tar to help reduce oil on the scalp and prevent flaking. Use exactly according to directions and consult your doctor if the product does not reduce your dandruff within several weeks.
