Don't put up with hair that feels like straw. Damaged hair is caused by exposure to the sun or chlorine, frequent hair perming or hair coloring, the use of hair straighteners, blow dryers or curlers on the hair, or constant use of styling products like hairspray and hair gel. When hair is severely damaged, the only remedy is waiting for it to grow out. In the meantime, infuse your hair with moisture and make it more manageable, soft and shiny.
Step 1
Create a moisturizing hair mask. In "Cosmopolitan" magazine, Helen Ambrosen suggests mixing up an avocado, an egg, a banana and 2 tbsp. of olive oil, then applying it directly to your hair for 10 minutes. Rinse the mixture out in the shower and repeat every few weeks as needed to add moisture to the hair.
Step 2
Condition your hair every time you wash it. Instead of shampooing and getting out of the shower, apply conditioner to your hair to restore some of the natural oils when you shampoo.
Step 3
Wash your hair every other day at the most. Shampooing strips hair of its natural oils and makes it more brittle and dry. If your hair is oily at the roots, shampoo only at the roots to keep the ends of your hair more manageable.
Step 4
Wear a hat, suggests Steven Docherty, senior art director at Vidal Sassoon Salon. Instead of exposing your damaged hair to the sun and wind, keep it under a hat when you go outside.
Step 5
Apply mayonnaise to your hair once a week to lock in moisture. Mayonnaise contains fats and oils that will infuse your hair with moisture. Leave the mayonnaise in your hair for up to an hour before washing it out in the shower.
