Eye support supplements contain rich amounts of health-promoting antioxidants. These supplements can be purchased individually or as part of an eye health supplement. All of these products provide eyes with the needed nutrients to operate properly. In addition to consuming supplements, it is recommended that you wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet sun rays and other high-energy radiation to protect your eyes and to prevent further damage.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A plays a key role in vision health, according to the National Institute of Health. The vitamin assists in keeping the surface linings of eyes healthy, thereby protecting your eyes from potential infections. Healthy linings help your retinals operate properly, keep your eyes moistened and improve night vision. When found in animal foods, vitamin A is absorbed as retinol. When found in plant foods, the vitamin is called a carotenoid. The most commonly known carotenoid is beta-carotene. You can get your vitamin A through supplements labeled vitamin A, retinol, beta-carotene or via a multivitamin.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant that is needed for eye support, according to the Mayo Clinic. The eyes contain high levels of the vitamin. Consuming the proper amount of vitamin C is particularly important for preventing the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, says the National Institute of Health. Vitamin C can be part of a multivitamin/mineral supplement. Or, it can be purchased individually. The nutrient can also be purchased in powdered form and made into a beverage.

Vitamin E

The American Academy of Ophthalmology claims that vitamin E is a necessary antioxidant to provide eye support. The antioxidants found in vitamin E are known for decreasing the likelihood of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin E can be purchased in liquid form, capsule or tablet form. It also can be purchased as a powder to be added to beverages.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Your overall eye health can improve by consuming the nutrient-rich omega-3 fatty acids. These unsaturated fatty acids can help to improve tear secretion, while also decreasing any inflammation found in your eye, states eyeworld.org. This is why they are commonly used for counteracting the effects of dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly found in a variety of fatty fishes such as salmon, sardines, trout, and/or albacore tuna. These fatty acids can be purchased as fish oil, salmon oil, flax seed oil or cod liver oil supplements. Sometimes Omega-3 is added as a nutrient to other supplements.

Lutein

The American Academy of Opthalmology claim that lutein is good for eye health. Lutein contains antioxidant-rich carotenoids such as beta carotene and alpha carotene. These antioxidants are known for increasing the blood circulation to the eyes. Dr. Ray Sahalien, an eye specialist at raysahalien.com, says that once lutein is ingested, it converts to vitamin A.
