What Is Flumist?

Flumist refers to an influenza virus vaccine that's administered to prevent infection with the flu. Drugs.com says Flumist is created each year to accommodate the different influenza strains that develop.

Features

Drugs.com says Flumist exposes the body to tiny doses of the influenza virus in order to desensitize the body from it. Specifically, the body begins to make antibodies (proteins) against this virus to protect itself from a future attack.

Indications

The National Library of Medicine says Flumist is a flu vaccine meant for people between ages 2 and 49.

Side Effects

Flumist's side effects include nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, muscle pain and vomiting, says Drugs.com. Flumist can also lead to vomiting, irritability, chills and a low fever.

Warnings

Flumist should not be given to people who are allergic to eggs, egg proteins, gelatin or gentamicin because it can lead to an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of the throat.

Adminstration

Flumist is given as a nasal spray into both nostrils. This should be given each year.
