Foods Highest in Antioxidants

Cellular renewal in the body creates free radicals, which can be harmful. Antioxidants found in the foods we eat can help combat these dangerous free radicals and can fight against the risk of cancer, heart disease, the aging process, deterioration of the organs, and can help boost the immune system. Certain foods contain more antioxidants than others, so it is a good idea to learn which foods can provide the most antioxidant power.

Fruits

Fruits are generally high in antioxidants and they contain many other vital nutrients and vitamins. Fruits that are highest in antioxidants include berries, oranges, grapes, plums, grapefruit, kiwi, pineapple and pomegranate.

Dried Fruit

Surprisingly, dried fruit has a higher antioxidant ration that fresh fruit because the water content has been removed. The best antioxidant-rich dried fruits include apricots, prunes and dates.

Vegetables

Like fruits, vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Those with the highest levels of antioxidants include kale, red cabbage, parsley, artichokes, red beets, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, avocados and asparagus.

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices offer concentrated amounts of antioxidants. those offering the highest amounts are cinnamon, paprika, chili pepper, parsley, turmeric, oregano, garlic, tarragon, dill weed, peppermint, mustard seed, curry powder, paprika, ginger and cardamom.

Nuts

Nuts are high in antioxidants. Pistachios, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews and hazelnuts are all good sources of antioxidants.

Cereals

Cereals like barley, millet, oats and corn are good sources of antioxidants.

Beverages

Juices, like apple, grapefruit and tomato juice have a lot of antioxidants. Green and black tea, and even coffee, are high in antioxidants as well.
