Persantine is the brand name of dipyridamole, a prescription medication administered as a pill, capsule or through injection. It is used to help prevent the possibility of having a stroke by stopping the formation of blood clots. It may be used for heart conditions and in patients who have mechanical implants in their hearts that may cause clots to form. Persantine also may be used to help diagnose blood flow problems in your heart.
Abdominal Side Effects
There are no common serious side effects reported with the use of Persantine, the Mayo Clinic reports. There are several common non-serious side effects, however. The most common is cramps that form in your abdomen or stomach without other explainable causes. These cramps may cause discomfort and pain for their duration, but they are reported as common only when the medication first is administered to you. If such cramping continues past the initial phase of treatment with Persantine, tell your physician about it. Drugs.com also reports vomiting as a common side effect of the medicine.
Bowel Side Effects
When you first take Persantine, you may experience the common side effects of loose stools and diarrhea. Diarrhea simply means defecation with a looser consistency than normal. Since so much liquid is flushed from your system with diarrhea, it is recommended that you drink extra fluids to replenish your body. Diarrhea should not continue as you get used to Persantine, but tell your doctor if it does.
Other Side Effects
Persantine also may cause a few other common side effects not considered serious. These, too, tend to occur when you start taking the drug, but should go away on their own. You may find you get dizzy, especially when standing from a prone or sitting position. Because Persantine thins the blood to prevent clotting, a sudden drop in blood pressure is possible, which can cause this sudden dizziness. You also may get hot flashes or bodily flushing in which your skin suddenly turns red and you feel especially warm. Headaches also are possible when you first take Persantine, as is itching on your skin.
