The cabbage soup diet is a favorite of dieters who turn to it for quick weight loss. The diet is a good way to jump start any diet plan and should really only be followed for seven days before starting a more traditional diet. While the cabbage soup is the centerpiece of the eating plan, the diet also includes a variety of other foods that can also be eaten in large quantities, so adjust your shopping list accordingly. This diet is sometimes referred to as the Mayo Clinic diet, but it has no relation to that institution.

Soup Ingredients

For the cabbage soup itself you'll need cabbage, six onions , two green peppers, a large can of diced tomatoes, three carrots, a box of mushrooms, celery, a package of Lipton onion soup mix, bouillon, a 48-oz. can of V8 juice, salt, pepper, garlic, curry and some parsley for seasoning.

Vegetables

There are several days on the diet when you can eat as many vegetables as you wish. Choose any vegetables except corn, peas or beans. In addition you'll need at least six tomatoes and one baking potato.

Fruit

Shop for a variety of fruit. On day one of the plan you may eat all the fresh fruit you desire, however, you'll need to buy a bunch of bananas for day four when you need to consume at least eight bananas.

Meats

Buy beef, chicken and fish. Day five of the diet requires 10 to 20 oz. of beef, but you may substitute skinless chicken or fish. On day six, you may eat an unlimited amount of beef.

Beverages

Stock up on a variety of unsweetened fruit juices, teas and bottled water for the duration of the diet. The diet plan also calls for copious amounts of water. Unlimited skim milk is required for day four of the diet.

Other Foods

You may have butter on your baked potato and brown rice on the last day of the diet.
