Acne blemishes occur for most people at some time in their lives, and are often treated with chemical products, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid gel and astringent toners. Unfortunately, these products can cause the skin to become irritated and inflamed. Luckily, acne can be cleared up by applying a few effective household treatments.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that is comprised of smooth particulates. When combined with water, a paste is formed that can be massaged onto the skin to remove dead skin, excess oils and bacteria that could become trapped inside the pores. Baking soda can also be used as a toner that can help kill off acne-causing bacteria. To make a baking soda toner, 8 oz. of water can be combined with 1 tsp. of baking soda, then applied to the skin after cleansing. If irritation or inflammation occurs, discontinue its use. Baking soda can be used on the skin twice per day.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is an acidic substance that contains large amounts of Vitamin C. Using lemon juice on the skin can help increase skin cell turnover, which helps the dead skin cells slough off more easily and increases the rate at which new skin cells can develop. Lemon juice can be used on the skin as a toner and a compress. To use lemon juice as a toner, splash the skin thoroughly with the juice after cleansing and allow it to dry completely. To use lemon juice as a compress, soak a few cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, then lay them onto the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Lemon juice can be applied twice per day.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is a mineral-based substance that is usually used to dry up chicken pox blisters or relieve the itching from a poison ivy rash, but can also be extremely helpful in drying up acne pustules and cysts. Because calamine lotion is natural and gentle on the skin, it can be used multiple times per day without causing irritation. To apply calamine lotion, a cotton swab should be covered with the lotion and dabbed onto each acne blemish. Once dry, it should be allowed to remain on the skin for up to one hour, then rinsed off with water. Calamine lotion can be applied up to three times per day.
