Ingrown hairs after waxing are the result of hair being broken off bluntly and growing in at an angle upon regrowth. This causes the hair to not pass through the follicle as it should and grow into the skin, creating an infection which appears as a raised red bump resembling a pimple. Waxing pulls hair from the root which can distort the follicles furthering the chance of ingrown hairs. However, many people report experiencing fewer ingrown hairs when waxing than when shaving. There are steps that you can take to not only treat ingrown hairs when they occur, but also to prevent their occurrence.

Prevention

Step 1

Exfoliate your skin with a loofa or body scrub every time you shower and especially after you wax.

Step 2

Keep your skin moisturized with an appropriate moisturizer for your skin type.

Step 3

Allow your hair to grow longer, at least 1/-inch, before you wax.

Step 4

Keep the skin in the areas you wax very clean. Wash well after exercising or sweating.

Treatment

Step 1

Do not exfoliate the area with the ingrown hair.

Step 2

Apply a warm compress to the area three times for about 15 minutes until it heals.

Step 3

Wear loose fitting clothing until the ingrown hair heals. This will remove the chance of further aggravation to the area.

Things You'll Need

  • Loofa or body scrup for exfoliating
  • Moisturizer for your skin type
  • Warm compress
