Downhill skiing is exhilarating from the moment you step off the lift at the top of the mountain until you get back on at the bottom. Selecting the right downhill skis allows the skier to focus on skiing without the frustration of tripping over your skis, sinking when you should be floating and not being able to make those quick turns.

Step 1

Choose the right ski for your gender. Women's skis typically come in a shorter size, are lighter weight and have a different mass distribution than a comparable men's ski. These differences in women's skis were sparked by the fact that women have a lower center of gravity, and are typically shorter than and lighter than men. Women's skis are often times made with a wooden core, which allows better control and less weight.

Step 2

Determine your correct ski length. A good rule of thumb is that the skis should end between your chin and the top of your head when stood end to end next to you. Heavier individuals need a slightly wider or longer ski, coming up above the eyebrows, to help with turning and weight distribution. Newer skiers may prefer shorter skis for easier turning. Short skis are also recommended for narrow chutes; longer skis are recommended for wide-open, groomed runs.

Step 3

Decide what kind of ski fits your skiing habits. An all-mountain ski is appropriate for all levels of skiers, to be used on groomed, powder and mogul runs. For those light, deep snow days, choose a powder ski. Back-country skis are made for individuals who prefer the untracked wilderness as their ski domain. If you are pushing the limits with speed and tricks, twin tip or freestyle skis are the best choice.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are still unsure as to what type of ski best suits you, choose an all-mountain ski. It performs well in most conditions and can go anywhere on the mountain.
