People go on detox or cleansing diets to rid their body of the many toxins they are exposed to daily through pollution, processed foods and chemicals. The body's lymphatic system, kidneys and liver do a good job of cleaning these pollutants from the body, and detox diets endeavor to enhance the process. Detox diets may involve a fast, a liquid diet or a whole foods diet that de-emphasizes certain "harmful" products. Although no scientific research definitively supports the claims that a detox diet improves health, embarking on a healthier lifestyle that involves the consumption of healthy foods and a decreased exposure to toxic chemicals makes sense.

Eat More Plant Food

Incorporate as much fresh produce into your diet as possible. Colorful vegetables and fruits, like leafy greens, berries, eggplant, red and yellow peppers, tomatoes, and watermelon, provide a number of detoxification benefits. The fiber in these foods helps clean out the system reducing constipation and bloating. Brilliant color in fresh foods usually indicates the presence of anti-oxidants, which help fight disease-causing free radical toxins in the body. Eat berries with your breakfast, choose salad for lunch and serve two or three types of vegetables with dinner.

Skip Processed Foods

Read ingredient lists on your packaged foods and get rid of any that include more than five ingredients or list anything that cannot be found in nature. Stay away from pre-marinated meats, seasoning packets, bottled salad dressings and canned soups. Flavor your foods with fresh herbs, lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. Prepare your own meals as often as possible, and when you do visit a restaurant--opt for oil and vinegar dressings on salads and ask for your meats and vegetables to be served sans sauce. This will help reduce your exposure to preservatives, excessive sodium and artificial colors and flavorings.

Minimize Caffeine, Alcohol and Sugar

Most detox diets ask that you eliminate caffeine, alcohol and added sugars. If completely removing them from your diet is just too daunting a prospect, try weaning slowly. Cut back on your servings of coffee. Use real milk instead of artificial creamer if you do opt for one cup. Choose sparkling water with lemon instead of soda--even diet varieties. Pass on the mixed drinks and enjoy just one glass of red wine--if anything at all. You may experience a bit of withdrawal, but overtime your cravings will subside.

Cut Back on American Staples

The American diet emphasizes red meat, refined flours, white potatoes and salt. Move away from these trends and make a few meals during the week completely vegetarian, focusing on beans, tofu or eggs as the protein source. Cut out nitrate-full processed meats like hotdogs and deli meats. Prepare whole grains like steamed brown rice or quinoa instead of white dinner rolls or mashed potatoes.

Clean Naturally

Phase out cleaning and beauty products containing man-made chemicals. Purchase all-natural products that use natural plant oils. Minimize your exposure to pollutants to keep your body clear of toxins.
