When you're on a diet, it is important to be able to tell whether a diet is working for you, and if it is, how well it's working. Diets should produce consistent progress towards your weight loss goals, and without information to monitor your diet, you don't know if your diet is working well or if you need to make some adjustments to get better results. The best way to monitor a diet is to keep a weight loss journal with your diet information.

Step 1

Find a log. Your weight loss log can be a spiral notebook, a binder or even a photo album. There are some computer programs that you can use to track your data.

Step 2

Decide what to track. Some people only keep track of the basics: weight, food and exercise. If you want to get more detailed, you can also track fat, protein or carbohydrate intake as well.

Step 3

Keep it handy. In order to accurately log everything you eat, you need to keep your weight loss journal with you. Another option is to keep a small notepad and pen with you and transfer the data to the weight loss journal later.

Step 4

Be consistent. Your weight loss journal is a daily log. In order to monitor a diet, you have to keep data to look back at. It gets tiring and annoying to keep up with at times, but it is worth it to analyze your diet accurately.

Step 5

Evaluate your data. After you have accumulated data over a month, look back at your weight loss progress. Analyze your weekly totals. Evaluate what was different when you didn't lose weight. This will help you see what works and what doesn't, and allow you to accurately monitor future progress with your changes.
