Cefdinir, the generic name for the drug Omnicef, is an antibiotic available prescription only. It belongs to class of drugs called cephalosporins. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says indications for Cefdinir include treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute otitis media (infection of the ear), acute maxillary sinusitis (infection of the sinuses located near the cheeks), pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections. Cefdinir binds to bacteria preventing them from forming cell walls and leading to their eventual death. Cefdinir is generally well-tolerated but may cause a few side effects.

Diarrhea and Nausea

Diarrhea is the most common side effect of Cefdinir occurring in up to 15 percent of people. Eating yogurt or taking probiotics including Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Saccharomyces boulardii, may help. Probiotics can be found in the pharmacy; discuss your options with a pharmacist or physician. Nausea may also be seen but is less common occurring in about 3 of percent of people or less. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy may be able to help with these effects. Eating small meals spread evenly throughout the day may also help. If these side effects worsen or you have water or bloody diarrhea, seek medical attention immediately.

Headache

Headache may be seen with the administration of Cefdinir and occurs in about 2 percent of users. Even though it does not occur in a large percentage of users, it can be bothersome and lead to discontinuation of the medication. This side effect should diminish as the body adjusts to the medication; however, seek medical help if it becomes persistent.

Vaginal Infection

A vaginal infection caused by fungus, called vaginal moniliasis, can occur in up to 4 percent of people. Symptoms of vaginal moniliasis include irritation, itchiness, redness and swelling of the vagina and vaginal area. Pain during intercourse and white discharge may also be present. An infection could require further medical attention; discuss any concerns with a health care provider.
