A basketball net is not essential to the game, but it does have its purpose. A net helps determine when the ball has gone through the rim, and corrals and deposits the ball onto the same spot on the ground after each made basket. Without a net, the ball often rolls off the court after a made shot and slows the game down. Playing with no net can also lead to players in the act of rebounding being struck in the head or face with the ball after it goes through the hoop. With so many benefits, it makes sense to attach a net to the rim.

Step 1

Spread the net out on a flat surface to determine the top from the bottom of the net. The top will have a larger diameter than the bottom.

Step 2

Climb a ladder while holding the top of the net until you reach the rim.

Step 3

Take one of the strands from the top of the net and tuck it into one of the curled loops underneath the rim. Each strand of the net should be attached into these loops, so make your way around the rim until you're done. Be sure that the strands are fully tucked into the loops.

Step 4

Move the ladder off to the side and shoot a basketball through the net a few times to ensure the net is fully attached to the rim.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sometimes new nets can be tight and keep the ball from dropping to the ground. Try gently stretching the net before attaching it to the rim to keep this from happening. Otherwise, just continue to make baskets and the net should loosen after a few shots.
  • Metal nets can rust and become sharp, raising the possibility of damaging your basketball and injuring yourself.
