Orlistat 60mg is marketed as Alli in the United States. In higher doses, it is sold as Xenical, RxList.com reports. Orlistat 60mg or Alli is available without a prescription over-the-counter (OTC) to help you lose weight. It typically is taken three times per day, once with each meal if the meals contain fat. The drug works to prevent fat from being absorbed into your intestines. Although all medications may produce side effects, not everyone who takes a particular drug will get all or any. Serious side effects should be reported to your doctor.

Pain

The use of orlistat 60mg has been approved for OTC sale in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration. Despite this, some common side effects can be serious, the Mayo Clinic notes. Orlistat 60mg may induce pain in various parts of your body. For example, pain in your bladder is quite common and serious. Aches and pains throughout your body are possible, including headaches and pain in one side of your body or your lower back. Pain and aches also may be experienced in your muscles.

Flu-Like Side Effects

Orlistat 60 can induce flu-like side effects you may not immediately think of as being caused by the drug. These are serious side effects and common. Typical such effects may include vomiting, chills and a fever, a cough, congestion in your sinuses, nausea, a sore throat, a runny nose and sneezing. Congestion in your ears also is a potential side effect.

Stomach and Bowel Side Effects

Because orlistat 60 prevents your intestines from absorbing as much fat as they normally would, you may get diarrhea while taking it. This may be caused by your body flushing out more waste than is normal. Dehydration is the common result of diarrhea, so along with talking to your doctor about the side effect, drink extra fluids to replenish your body. You also may experience a loss of appetite while taking the drug. Non-serious side effects in this area include discomfort or pain in your abdomen, bowel movement increases, bowel movements that are oily or an inability to control your defecation. These side effects should pass as your body gets used to orlistat 60.
