Control Lactose Intolerance by Eating Dairy Substitutes

Program Description
If you're lactose intolerant, you're probably interested in finding non-dairy replacements for milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and all the other dairy foods you enjoy. Luckily, there are lots of options for indulging in creamy, delicious food without eating any dairy or its accompanying lactose.

Actions
1. There's more to non-dairy milks than plain soy milk--there's also rice, oat and almond milks, and many non-dairy milks come in chocolate, vanilla or fruit flavors.

2. Many frozen fruit sorbets are dairy-free, and natural food stores carry soy ice cream, which comes in plenty of rich chocolaty, fudgy, I-can't-believe-it's-dairy-free flavors.

3. Soy yogurt tends to be thinner and lower in fat than many dairy yogurts, but is still smooth and creamy and perfect for mixing with granola or fruit.

4. If you're avoiding all traces of dairy, make sure you read over the labels of soy-, rice- or almond-based cheese very carefully, as many lactose-free cheeses still contain casein, a milk protein which adds flavor.

5. Try soy versions of eggnog, coffee creamer or whipped cream.

6. Use margarine or olive oil instead of butter.

7. Instead of milk chocolate, eat dark or semisweet chocolate--it's often dairy-free, and has more antioxidants, too.
