Proper gear is an essential element for a great workout. Often overlooked, workout gear not only provides comfort when exercising, but also enhances safety and helps fitness buffs avoid sidelining injuries. Before completing any type of exercise program, you must first ensure you have the appropriate workout gear for the activity.

Clothing

The foundation of a challenging workout is proper clothing. Exercisers should dress for weather conditions and choose clothing made of breathable fabrics that wick away moisture. In the April 2008 issue of the Canadian Journal of Health and Nutrition magazine, "Alive," author Lee Segall states, "You want to feel comfortable and unrestricted by the clothing you work out in. Choose clothes that stretch with you and are made of breathable materials, such as spandex blends. Organic alternatives include hemp, soy and bamboo."
When choosing clothing, consider proper fit. Runners and cyclists, for example, should avoid baggy, wide-leg pants. Trainers at YogaFit, an international company that certifies yoga instructors, recommend that yogis avoid overly tight clothing, stating, "You want to make absolutely certain that it [clothing] will not bind or restrict your body in any way. You need to be able to achieve your yoga postures freely and without clothing resistance." By matching the type of fabric and fit to your activity, you will have a much better workout.

Shoes

Shoes are one of the most important workout gear elements. Proper shoes are essential in avoiding injuries to the feet, knees and back. Different types of shoes should be worn when performing different activities. "Today" show contributor Paul Hochman recommends shoes with sticky rubber soles for trail climbing, cross-trainers for gym workouts that involve lateral movements and running shoes for jogging. Regardless of the activity, however, a footwear specialist can ensure you have the right shoes with the right fit.

Sports Bras

Women must be extremely cautious when choosing sports bras. When purchasing a bra, be sure to consider the amount of impact associated with your exercise program, proper fit and style. In addition, factors such as compression and encapsulation can affect the amount of breast movement allowed by various bras. Sports bra specialists can help you determine the proper bra for your needs.

Protective Gear

Protective gear such as helmets, pads, gloves and mouth guards ensure safe and effective workouts. Always use proper equipment when exercising. Be sure protective items fit properly and are secure enough to avoid becoming dislodged or removed in the event of a crash or fall.

Towel and Water

Towels and water bottles are necessary when working out. Gym etiquette requires users to remove drops of sweat from machines after use. Towels also help remove sweat from the face and eyes. Water is essential for proper hydration and body cooling. According to the PBS weekly fitness series "America's Walking," "You should drink about 8 oz. [of water] every 15 minutes while exercising."
Using proper workout gear will ensure you have a fun and challenging workout. Essential items such as clothing, shoes, protective equipment and water will allow you to get the safe and effective workout you desire.
