Pimples are caused by bacteria, sebum, oil and dead skin cells becoming clogged and trapped inside the pores. Although many companies create acne products formulated to clear the skin, some of these products contain strong chemical ingredients that can irritate the skin. Luckily, acne can be eliminated by using a few natural home remedies that are both effective and non-irritating.
Castor Oil
Castor oil is a highly purgative and non-comedogenic oil that can be used on the skin to flush out the pores. To use, spread 1 to 2 tbsp. of castor oil over the skin and massage in for 3 minutes and then wipe away with a steaming washcloth. The castor oil bonds to the trapped oils in the pores, which can them be drained out once the steam is applied to the skin. Castor oil can be applied to the skin twice per day.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an antimicrobial oil that the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, suggests can kill off acne-causing microbes and bacteria as well as benzoyl peroxide, but without the irritating side effects, such as peeling, itching and burning. A cotton swab should be dipped into tea tree oil, then again into water to dilute the oil. The diluted oil should be applied to the skin up to three times per day.
Calamine Lotion
Calamine lotion is a mineral lotion that can dry out the pus and fluid inside the acne blemishes. The calamine lotion should be spread onto the acne breakouts, allowed to dry and then washed off after at least 10 minutes. Calamine lotion can be applied to the skin up to three times per day.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can be used as both a toner and a facial scrub that can kill off acne-causing bacteria and remove dead skin cells that can clog the pores. To make a baking soda toner, 8 oz. of water should be combined with 1 tsp. of baking soda in a bottle, then applied to the skin up to three times per day. To make a baking soda scrub, 1 tbsp. of baking soda should be combined with 1 tsp. of water and then massaged onto the skin for 2 minutes. Use a gentle touch when applying the scrub to avoid irritating the skin. A baking soda scrub can be used on the skin once per day.
