Control Lactose Intolerance While Still Eating Dairy Products

Program Description
Lactose intolerance can be an inconvenience, but it doesn't mean that you have to give up the milk, cheese and other dairy products that you love. If you have a mild lactose intolerance, you may be able to eat certain dairy foods that are naturally lower in lactose, or take supplements to improve digestion.

Actions
1. Lactose intolerance is caused by your body not producing enough lactase to properly digest dairy products--take lactase enzyme supplements half an hour before eating any dairy.

2. Lactase drops or tablets can also be added directly to milk immediately before drinking.

3. Look for "lactose-free" or "lactose reduced" milk, which has had some or all of the lactose removed from it.

4. The live, active cultures in yogurt partially break down lactose, making it easier for some people to digest.

5. Hard cheeses such as cheddar or Swiss are naturally lower in lactose.

6. Be sure to read labels carefully--many packaged breads, cookies, crackers and other snack foods many contain hidden dairy, and thus lactose.

7. Track your dairy intake and make a note on how you react--some people can tolerate one glass of milk, but not two, or may be able to handle small amounts of ice cream.
