The first step to playing golf is learning how to hold the club correctly. Once a golfer learns how to hold the club the right way, it will give him a feeling of security every time he picks up the club. There are three basic grips to choose from, although the overlapping grip is used by the majority of players in the game today.
Step 1
Grip the club with your left hand (for a right-handed golfer), about 1/4 inch from the top of the club. Take the small finger of your right hand and put it in the space between your forefinger and middle finger of your left hand. Align your thumbs down the shaft of the club. Hold the club firmly with both hands, but don't squeeze it tightly. It should be the equivalent of a firm handshake with a new business associate, a "5" on a scale of a 1 to 10. This is called the overlapping grip and it is used by golfers who want accuracy.
Step 2
Take hold of your golf club with your left hand and hold onto it about 1/4 inch below the top of the grip. Take the small finger of your right hand and put it directly underneath the forefinger on your left hand. Align your thumbs down the shaft. This is called the interlocking grip and it is often used by golfers who are looking for extra distance.
Step 3
Use the baseball grip if you are looking for more freedom when you swing the club. With this grip, you hold the golf club as if it were a baseball bat. Wrap the fingers of your left hand around the top of the club and put your right hand directly underneath it in the same manner. Your left and right hands are close enough to touch but there is no overlap or interlocking of the fingers. This grip is often favored by those who think the overlapping and interlocking grips are too restrictive.
Tips and Warnings
- Try all three grips at the driving range before you decide which one is right for you.
