Proponants of colon cleanses, programs intended to detoxify the digestive system by limiting food intake and taking various herbs for a designated amount of time, believe that symptoms, such as pain, inflammation, constipation and food or substance cravings will reduce, leading to overall improved wellness. According to Andrew Picco, M.D. of the Mayo Clinic, little scientific research upholds the effectiveness of such cleanses and partaking in them may lead to harmful side effects.
Dehydration
Colon cleanse programs typically involve some form of fiber laxative, such as psyllium and/or herbal supplements that have a diuretic, or fluid-flushing, effect. Picco warns that these ingredients may lead to dehydration. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, dehydration can cause an array of additional side effects, including fatigue, dry skin, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion and, in extreme circumstances, heartbeat and breathing irregularities. Mild dehydration can usually be treated through increased water intake and/or intake of sports drinks that contain electrolytes (salts that conduct electricity in the body). In severe cases, medication attention is required. If you are participating in a colon cleanse and are experiencing symptoms of dehydration, discontinue the cleanse and increase water intake. For best results, it is recommended to discuss concerns and symptoms with a medical professional.
Electrolyte Imbalance
Colon cleansing may also lead to electrolyte imbalance. According to Picco, those that utilize supplements containing substances, such as sodium phosphate, can lead to elevated levels of electrolytes, a dangerous potential side effect for those with kidney or heart disease. Dehydration due to diuretic or laxative ingredients can lead to electrolyte irregularities as well. Electrolyte balance is crucial for proper muscle coordination, heart function, fluid absorption and excretion, nerve function and concentration. Depending on the length, intensity and ingredients used during a colon cleansing program, any number of these important functions may be impaired.
Nutrient Deficiency and Impaired Immune System
Colon cleansing programs are often toted as weight-loss enhancers or detoxification "diets." According to Susan Moores, a dietitian for MSNBC, popular colon cleansing programs, such as the Master Cleanse, are essentially starvation diets that can lead to nutrient deficiencies and related health problems. Dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Lona Sandon, told MSNBC that cleansing programs that involve fasting run a high risk of reduced nutrient-absorption which can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system, which heightens risk for the development of infections and disease.
According to Picco, doctors may recommend a supervised colon cleanse as preparation for a colonoscopy or similar procedure, most do not suggest cleansing as a means of detoxification. The digestive system and bowel cleanse the body of waste and bacteria naturally, without help of colon cleansing programs. If you wish to improve digestive health or overall wellness, talk to your doctor or a qualified nutritional professional about safe, healthy ways to attain your goals.
