Soccer goalie is a unique position that requires a specialized skill set. Soccer goalie training is a vital part of your development if you are to become a successful soccer goalie. Soccer goalie training should focus on performing a high number of repetitions of skills used regularly in a game. Crucial skills include footwork, shot stopping, one-on-one breakaways, high balls and distribution.

Preparation

Good preparation is important before beginning a soccer goalie training regime. Proper equipment required includes cleats, shin guards and gloves. Shorts and a shirt are used mostly, but hard ground or turf may make it better to use long pants or long sleeves. This avoids cuts and burns on skin because of the consistent diving on the ground. You should warm up and stretch thoroughly before any training session.

Individual

It is possible to practice some training alone. Quick footwork drills, sprints and jumping can also be practiced with no equipment or with a few cones as markers. Skills to practice include shot stopping, high ball catching and distribution. You can practice handling against a wall by throwing the ball powerfully and catching it on the rebound. Throwing farther to the side will allow you to practice diving saves, and high balls can also be practiced. Focus on quick feet, explosive movement and correct techniques. High repetitions are the key to success, like all aspects of goalie training.

Group

Some aspects of soccer goalie training can only be practiced in pairs or groups to simulate situations that occur during a soccer game. Shot stopping can be practiced more accurately with balls shot from a range of angles and distances, and crosses can be fed in to the area from wide to practice collecting high balls. Extra players can also progress practice by following in shots for rebounds or screening the vision of the goalkeeper. Trying out for a travel team or joining a recreational team will help you practice in group situations and even allow you access to coaching on a regular basis for advice on technique.

In Game

Teams allow you to practice live soccer game situations. Playing in a game as part of your goalie training regime allows you to enhance your skills in more advanced areas. Recognizing when shots are coming, one-on-one breakaways is developed, as is communicating to defenders. Distribution is also practiced against live opposition.

Supplemental

Supplement your practice with expert advice if possible. Find a former goalkeeper who will help you with specific tips about the position. Professional goalkeeper training, or even goalkeeper specific camps are available to supplement your training. These aspects will help you become more advanced in your development as a soccer goalie.
