Protein shakes are a great way to get important nutrients in when you're busy and don't have time to cook a meal. Since they are rich in the protein essential to the recovery of muscles, these shakes are an excellent choice for a snack after the gym. Bodybuilders can benefit greatly from drinking protein shakes as all of the ingredients work together to provide the nutrients a bodybuilder needs.
Milk
According to Oxygen Women's Fitness magazine, drinking milk can help your body burn fat. Use low-fat milk in your protein shake as it has fewer calories and grams of fat than whole milk. Additionally, milk contains not only protein, but carbohydrates which help to restore energy to your body after a tough workout.
Protein Powder
Protein powder is a commonly used ingredient in protein shakes. Bodybuilders enjoy because it tastes great, comes in many flavors, and is nutritious and convenient. Protein powders can either be made of whey protein, soy protein, casein (which is a dairy product) or egg white protein. All of these types of proteins can help a bodybuilder gain muscle as they usually contain individual amino acids, the building blocks of protein.
Fruit
Fruit contains little protein, yet is great for bodybuilders to use in protein shakes because it improves the flavor and consistency of the shakes. Men's Fitness magazine recommends using frozen berries in your protein shake as they are rich in fiber and antioxidants yet low in calories.
Peanut Butter
Bodybuilders need to eat not only protein and carbohydrates, but also healthy fats. That's why peanut butter is a great addition to a protein shake. Peanut butter makes a protein shake thick and rich with a tablespoon delivering 95 calories, 8 g of healthy fat, plus protein and vitamins, according to Men's Fitness magazine.
Extracts or Flavorings
Though extracts and flavorings won't build muscle, they can make the protein shake taste better so that a bodybuilder is more inclined to drink it. Another benefit of flavorings is that bodybuilders can use a variety of different flavorings in their shakes each day so that they don't get bored with protein shakes. Men's Fitness recommends using a teaspoon of instant coffee or a few drops of peppermint extract for some flavor variety in your shakes.
