Ski poles play a large role in weight distribution on the ski. The proper ski pole length will aid in correct skiing technique, including having more control on the slopes.

Step 1

Stand up straight, wearing ski boots, with your arms at your sides. Turn the ski pole upside-down so the grip is resting on the ground.

Step 2

Grasp the pole beneath the basket. Your thumb should touch the basket.

Step 3

Note the position of your arm. If your arm is at a 90-degree angle, with the forearm parallel to the ground, the fit is perfect. If your forearm is tilting up, try a shorter pole. If your forearm is tilting down, try a taller pole.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you're unsure about pole length, go with a little longer pole. Poles can always be shortened if needed. A telescoping pole, which is adjustable, can be used for skiing that will involve differing terrains and hiking.
  • If your ski poles are too short, you will find yourself leaning too far forward. If the poles are too long, it will throw you back into your skis and your weight distribution will be off.

Things You'll Need
