A belt test is an exciting and challenging event for a martial artist. It tests both the physical and mental aptitude of a martial arts student. Kicks and strikes must all meet high standards in order to move on to the next level of training. Passing a test usually depends on how much time and effort is spent on preparing for it. If you want to pass your next belt test, there are 10 steps that you should follow in preparation.

Step 1

Talk to your instructor about what will be expected of you on the test. Make sure you understand all of the requirements for earning your next belt. Ask your instructor if there are any particular techniques that you should focus on while practicing for the test.

Step 2

Intensify your endurance training program so that you can make it through your entire belt test. Increase the amount of time that you are running, swimming or jumping rope each week in order to improve your cardiovascular endurance. Increase the repetitions of exercises like push-ups and lunges to improve muscular endurance.

Step 3

Find a fellow martial artist, friend or family member to help you practice. Have your training partner help you with self-defense or one-step sparring techniques. Be careful not to injure your training partner.

Step 4

Videotape yourself performing the martial arts techniques that will be required on your belt test. Watch the video and look for aspects of your performance that you may need to improve. Be critical of yourself, because the judges at your test will most certainly be critical of you.

Step 5

Have a group of friends or family members watch you perform your martial arts techniques. Alleviate nerves on test day by getting accustomed to doing your kicks, blocks, punches, and katas in front of an audience.

Step 6

Visualize yourself performing your required techniques. Imagine yourself being successful at your test and earning your next belt.

Step 7

Wash and press your martial-arts uniform prior to the test. Show respect for the judges and for the testing process by looking neat and clean.

Step 8

Get a good night's sleep before the test. Make sure that you are not tired or fatigued on the day of your test.

Step 9

Put yourself in the right frame of mind on the drive to your test. Listen to your favorite music or a motivational CD that will get you pumped up for the test.

Step 10

Be confident that you have prepared to the best of your abilities for the test. Be eager to show the judges why you deserve your next belt.
