Eye puffiness may make you look more tired than usual, but you may get puffy eyes even though you're fully rested. Puffy eyes can be caused by allergens, heredity and fluid retention from drinking excess caffeine, alcohol or sodium. Puffy eyes are not serious and do not require a doctor's care in most cases. According to the Mayo Clinic, you can treat puffy eyes at home using remedies from around the house, like a washcloth and a pillow.
Step 1
Prop your head up with two or more pillows while you are sleeping, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Fluid can accumulate underneath the eyes when you are sleeping, and sleeping with your head propped up encourages drainage to draw the liquid away from your eyes.
Step 2
Apply a cold compress to the eyes to reduce swelling, states dermatologist Marianne O'Donoghue, M.D. Rinse a clean washcloth in cold water or wrap it around a few ice cubes, then apply it to the eye area to temporarily reduce swelling.
Step 3
Sleep seven to eight hours a night. According to the Mayo Clinic, inadequate sleep can cause eye puffiness. If you've had trouble getting to sleep, allow 20 minutes to wind down before going to bed.
Step 4
Take an antihistamine. Antihistamine medications are available over-the-counter, and they will reduce swelling underneath the eyes that is due to exposure to allergens.
Step 5
Cut back on your intake of alcohol, caffeine and salty foods. Alcohol, caffeine and sodium can cause fluid retention, which accumulates in the eyes.
