Acne scars may occur after a pimple has healed, and can occur anywhere on the body. Acne scars may look like small, dimpled indentations in the skin, or red, brown or purple splotches on the skin's surface. Acne scars can be removed, but severe scars may require the attention of a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. In some cases, mild acne scars can go away on their own. Step 1
Exfoliate your skin at least once a week as you allow surface scars to fade. Brown, red or pink splotches on the skin's surface will usually disappear within one year. To increase healing time, slough off dead skin cells by exfoliating.
Step 2
Consult a dermatologist, who can inject a filler into pitted acne scars. According to the Mayo Clinic, a dermatologist can inject fat or collagen into the scar to help make the skin look more even. Fillers are temporary and must be injected every few months.
Step 3
Get microdermabrasion to help even out your skin tone and reduce the appearance of scars. In a microdermabrasion procedure, a dermatologist blows an abrasive substance at the afflicted area on the skin, removing the top layer of skin cells. When these skin cells grow back, skin will look smoother and appear more even in tone.
Step 4
Ask a dermatologist about laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing tightens the middle layer of skin while removing the top layer, states "Kids Health." When the skin heals, which will take between 3 and 10 days, your skin will appear more even in tone.
Step 5
Get fractional laser therapy for severe, pitted scars. A dermatologist can perform fractional laser therapy, although it is not often covered by insurance, according to "Kids Health." Fractional laser therapy works underneath the skin to raise dimpled areas to the skin's surface. Because fractional laser therapy does not work on the the top layer of skin, it does not require as much healing time as laser resurfacing or microdermabrasion.
