How To Make Your Own Basketball Goal

Basketball is a popular sport that is relatively inexpensive to play---all you need is a basketball and a hoop. If you don't have access to a public basketball court, you can make your own at home by building a basketball backboard. Follow a few simple instructions, and in no time you'll be shooting hoops in your driveway or backyard.

Step 1

Determine what type of material to make your goal out of. Plywood is a popular choice due to its low cost and relative abundance. Plexiglass and plastic are also popular choices. No matter what the material, make sure it is a sturdy piece, as it will have to support the hoop and the basketball, and withstand various weather conditions.

Step 2

Find a place to mount the goal. This may be on a pole or on the side of a long wall. If you choose a wall, make sure that it is at least 15 feet tall---while basketball hoops sit exactly 10 feet off the ground, you want to allow for extra room so the top of the backboard can sit firmly against the wall.

Step 3

Cut the goal. A typical goal is 48 inches wide and 36 inches tall. This provides a large target for shooters, as well as a backboard for shots that are slightly off. Mark the dimensions on the plywood, Plexiglass or plastic using a pencil. Carefully run the board through a table saw.

Step 4

Paint a white square on the goal to serve as a target when shooting bank shots. Measure out a 12-by-12-inch square perfectly in the center, with the bottom of the square at the top of the hoop.

Step 5

Drill four holes into the mount where you plan to attach the basketball goal, making sure the holes are as even as possible. Use screws to secure the goal to the mount, making sure it is level and secure.
