Program Description
You need lots of healthy food when you are battling cancer or dealing with chemotherapy, and the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients in fresh fruits and vegetables provide valuable energy and keep your body strong. A well-balanced plant-based diet, paired with a healthy lifestyle, might even help lower your cancer risk.
Actions
1. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage boost the immune system and may even prevent carcinogens from attacking healthy cells in your body.
2. The lycopene in tomatoes and other red or pink fruits, such as watermelon or guava, has been shown to prevent and slow the growth of some cancers, particularly prostate, lung and stomach cancer.
3. To reduce your risk of colon cancer, eat fruits and vegetables high in lutein, like spinach, oranges and celery.
4. Eating foods rich in beta carotene--like carrots, squash, kale and other yellow or dark green vegetables--and not smoking will reduce your risk of lung cancer.
5. Garlic contains compounds called allicin and allyl sulfur that prevent and slow the growth of many cancers, especially stomach and prostate cancer.
6. Ginger may help fight ovarian and colon cancer, and it's a great antidote to the nausea caused by chemotherapy.
