Welcome to LIVESTRONG.COM, your daily destination for health and fitness information on the Web. Here, you will find information and tools to help you take action, and a community to support you along the way. That said, if you came to LIVESTRONG.COM to discover some quick easy answers or magic tricks to easily achieve your goals, we need to have a little talk about your attitude before you read on. This site is about support, and we will give you that. But when push comes to shove, it is action and hard work that gets me where I want to go and who I want to be. I like setting goals, and gaining a deep understanding of everything required to achieve that goal, then it's time to get to work.
Life is full of challenges. I love the challenge of athletic competition, because it's clearly defined and has thus given me the gift of a very passionate and purposeful life. Every day for my nearly 20 years as a professional athlete, I woke up knowing exactly what I wanted and what I had to do to get there. Motivation was never a problem, nor was lack of focus. Now that I've retired from professional cycling, I realize that the "real world" is not as clear cut as my cycling life. My competition is no longer a guy in a different colored jersey, but a collection of more subtle and even insidious opponents. For example, I struggle, as I think we all do, with the daily competition of demands on my time and energy--trying to balance personal and family life with my business and my Foundation. In our work to support the efforts to find cures or raise the massive amounts of money needed to fight the war on cancer, I often encounter roadblocks; none more challenging than the epidemic of the disease itself. To persevere and keep my focus, I often find myself applying the lessons I learned in my athletic career: the importance of teamwork, of support and of focusing on an end result, and working hard to get there.
People have characterized me as restless, extremely competitive, manically driven and so on. I will consider these compliments, for there is nothing like going all out in whatever you are engaged in. Whether it's winning the Tour de France, being the parent who reads with your kid over and over and over until he really gets it, organizing a volunteer effort to clean up trash in your community, or fighting cancer with a positive, resolute attitude, we can all put the success formula of a champion into everything that we do.
Hopefully the great efforts of the LIVESTRONG.COM team can help motivate, inspire, inform and guide you in your quest to achieve personal goals and lead a healthy, happy, balanced life. Along those lines, I encourage you to provide feedback about our site and how we can serve you better. Please email us with your suggestions, compliments and critical feedback. I promise your effort will be carefully considered by our team. Thank you for visiting LIVESTRONG.COM!
