Choosing the right size baseball bat can be a major factor in a hitter's performance. Because baseball players come in all shapes, sizes and strengths, the bat is often a personal decision for a hitter. While there are no universal rules for choosing a bat, some things should be taken into account before you purchase one. Also, baseball leagues often have different requirements on bats, so check the rulebook before buying one.
Step 1
Grab a few bats of different sizes to quickly get a feel for what it is comfortable. Consider the handle and how the grip feels in your hands. If you have slow hands at the plate or are more of a contact hitter, a thicker bat handle may suit you better. If you are a power hitter or a hitter with quick hands at the plate, a thinner handle can generate more bat speed and produce more power with your swing.
Step 2
Measure the length of the bat by resting it against your leg. There is no exact place on your body that the bat is supposed to reach when you do this, but it should come to around the middle of your thigh. If the bat almost reaches to your hip, it is likely too long. If it rests closer to your knees, it is likely too short. Often, the bat's length is printed on the bottom of the handle.
Step 3
Hold the bottom of the handle with one hand, using only your fingers and thumb. Hold the bat out directly in front of you and raise the bat three or four times. Try to hold your arm straight out when you do this. If you bend your elbow when raising the bat, the bat is likely too heavy. If it feels easy to hold the bat without bending your elbow, try a heavier bat. Typically, hitters should use bats with the heaviest comfortable weight.
Tips and Warnings
- If no rulebook is available, ask your coach, umpire or other league official about size requirements for baseball bats.
