Vivelle Side Effects

Vivelle is one of many brand names in the United States for estrogen. This hormone is natural in females, but in some circumstances there is not enough of it in the body. When this occurs, Vivelle may be prescribed to help replace the natural hormone. It may be prescribed when you no longer produce enough estrogen following menopause, or to help keep you from developing bone weakness known as osteoporosis. It may be used in young girls who are late in their sexual development. Vivelle also is used to treat men and women for breast cancer and for men who have prostate cancer.

Pain

A common side effect of Vivelle is pain. The most serious pain may occur in your breasts, whether you are a man or woman taking the medication. You also may experience pain in your joints as another serious side effect. Tell your physician as soon as possible if you experience these problems. When you first start treatment with Vivelle, you may get other pain that will be temporary in most people. Pain in the bladder is common, as well as bodily aches. You may experience pain when urinating, and severe, throbbing headaches are possible as well. There is the potential, too, of pain in your neck or while you are having sexual intercourse. Tell your doctor if these persist.

Swelling and Skin Problems

Taking the estrogen replacement hormone therapy can produce some problems on your skin, such as redness. You also can get hives which are small, itchy bumps on your skin. Your skin may be irritated, too. Swelling may affect your legs and feet, as well as occur in your hands, lips, face and eyelids while taking Vivelle. Men and women also may experience an increase in the size of their breasts. While these are serious side effects, you also may get temporary skin redness and irritation. Swelling in the glands of your neck also may be temporary and disappear as you continue treatment. Itching also may occur in your genital and rectal areas.

Heart and Lungs Side Effects

The most common serious side effect of Vivelle on your heart is the acceleration of your heartbeat, which is called tachycardia. You may experience, too, a tightness in your chest. Breathing problems categorized as serious common side effects include difficulty breathing such as shortness of breath and wheezing when exhaling. Nasal congestion and sneezing are potential temporary side effects.

Mental Side Effects

Mental side effects of Vivelle may be temporary, but are common. For example, you may feel discouraged for no reason that is apparent. You may be fearful or feel emotionally empty or sad while taking the medicine. You may find yourself irritated by the actions of others or yourself. Finding pleasure in your normal interests may be hard or impossible when you start taking Vivelle. You may get nervous without cause, and you may find it difficult to sleep or concentrate.
