A Candida diet is a very restrictive food plan to help eliminate Candida Albicans from the body. The diet is truly a whole body cleanse--the goal is to kill off active Candida throughout the body and free the body of systemic yeast complications. Candida is known to be overactive in the vagina, intestines and gut and can be buried deep within the organs of the body. It can cause a host of issues including vaginal yeast infections, digestive issues and brain fog--just to name a few.

Vegtables

Fresh and steamed vegetables are a staple of a good Candida diet. While the diet restricts all processed foods, breads and white flour, it requires you to increase your intake of vegetables to provide nutrients and bulk to your meal plan. Stock up on broccoli, cauliflower, peppers of all colors and leafy greens. Enjoy carrots in light moderation; there is some sugar in carrots. Potatoes can be introduced after two weeks on the diet, and sweet potatoes are allowed at all times.

Fruits

Be careful with fruits. The point of the Candida diet is to starve the fungus. It feeds on sugar as a main source. Fruits, although healthy for you, can be supporting Candida. Bananas, red apples, grapes, peaches and pineapple are examples of fruits to avoid. Fruits low in sugar are green apples, berries, grapefruit, lemon, lime, cranberry and avocado.

Protein

Meat eaters can have protein at each meal in the form of egg, beef, chicken or fish. Pork is off limits as it has a higher incidence of parasites, thus complicating the cleansing process. The Candida diet is very restrictive so if you are vegetarian you must find alternative sources of protein. Dairy and sugar-free protein powder can offer an alternative; make shakes and creatively add protein powder to your meals.

Beverages

Coffee, colas and some teas are very acidic, so you will want to avoid those. The best beverage on a Candida diet is water, as it will help flush out your system of Candida's toxins as well as help with constipation. You can also drink unsweetened organic cranberry juice, diluted with water and gently sweetened with Stevia or Xylitol.

Whole Grains

Talk to your health care provider about whole grains. While white flour and yeast-laden breads are off limits, there may be room for organic brown rice, oats, millet and amaranth. This will most likely depend on the severity of your Candida infection and the depth of which it is embedded in your system. If you are cleansing on your own, eliminate whole grains for two weeks and slowly bring back one serving of whole grains every few days. Steer clear of whole wheat.
