A variety of appetite suppressants are available for today's weight loss-seeking consumer. Though some have proved helpful as an aid toward weight management, these products can also pose a risk for experiencing potentially harmful side effects. If you are considered medically overweight and wish to utilize an appetite suppressant to enhance your weight loss efforts, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor for best results.
Sleeplessness
Inability to sleep properly may be caused by some appetite suppressants. According to the Weight-control Information Network (WIN), appetite suppressants such as phentermine, diethylpropion and phendimetrazine may cause this side effect, as the medications affect the body's nervous system. The Harvard School of Public Health explains that loss of sleep can alter the way the body metabolizes and stores carbohydrates and can negatively affect hormones levels associated with appetite. Thus, lack of sleep can not only cause frustration and exhaustion, but also may lead to increased hunger and unwanted weight gain. If you experience difficulty falling or remaining asleep as a side effect of diet medications, talk to your doctor about an alternate appetite suppressant or natural means of promoting healthy sleep patterns and managing appetite.
Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
Many appetite suppressants contain stimulant properties, which can lead to elevated heart rate and blood pressure levels. According to WIN, generic prescription drugs such as sibutramine and phentermine as well as many over-the-counter herbal appetite suppressants, are associated with this side effect. Severity of this side effect varies depending on the appetite suppressant variety, the dosage and the individual. If you have or at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure or other heart-related conditions, medications and supplements that pose these side effects are best avoided. If you are taking an appetite suppressant and experience rapid or irregular heart beat, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately.
Mood Changes
Negative moods and feelings, such as irritability, nervousness and restlessness may occur as a result of taking particular appetite suppressants, particularly those that have a stimulant effect. Once the stimulant effect has passed, a drop in mood and/or energy may occur. According to the Mayo Clinic, such symptoms may dissipate once the body adjust to the medication and often do not require medical attention. If your mood changes are frequent or severe, however, discuss your concerns and symptoms with your doctor for best results.
