More than 200 viruses can cause the common cold. When the virus infects the upper respiratory tract, specifically the nose and throat, a number of symptoms develop. Some symptoms include itchy eyes, watery eyes, sneezing, sore throat, coughing congestion and even an itchy nose. The Mayo Clinic explains that the cold does not have a definite cure but treating symptoms, including an itchy nose, can provide temporary relief. Home remedies can help relieve irritation that causes an itchy nose.

Step 1

Run a humidifier at night while you sleep to moisturize the air. Dry air can cause dry nasal passages that can lead to itchiness and soreness. The more you can run the humidifier the less likely you will experience nasal itching from dryness. Sitting in the bathroom while a hot shower is running is another effective way to improve the humidity of the air.

Step 2

Use a medicine-free nasal spray. These are made of salt and water. Insert the nasal spray into one nostril while blocking the other nostril with your finger. Squeeze the bottle to administer the solution. Repeat this on the other side. Allow the solution to set in the nose for two or three minutes before allow it to run out. Tip your head forward over the sink to allow the solution to drain. Use tissues to blow the rest of the solution out of the nasal passages. When using saline with a small child, use a bulb-syringe to suction out the solution, as the child or infant is too young to blow her own nose.

Step 3

Apply a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly to a cotton swab. Gently insert it into the nose. Use the swab to apply the jelly to the inner tissues of the nose. Dry, flaking skin can be itchy and it can even bleed. Be sure not to insert the swab beyond the inner part of the nostril. This is not recommended for children or infants.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try over-the-counter medications, like antihistamine or decongestants, that can help treat the mucus drainage that contributes to nasal itching.
