For efficiency on a road bike ride, it is imperative that you maintain the PSI, pounds per square inch, in the tires. Tire pressure is affected by the heat and the cold. Bike tire pressure will drop with each long-distance ride. Knowing how to inflate the tires is key to having a great ride.

Step 1

Stabilize the bike. Place it on a bike repair stand, lean it against something stable or have another individual hold it.

Step 2

Find the tire tube stem located on the inside of the bicycle rim. Remove the black cap and unscrew the valve at the end of the tube stem.

Step 3

Attach the bicycle pump to the tire tube stem. Do this by placing the valve at the end of the pump over the stem valve and flipping the lock lever to keep it in place.

Step 4

Pump air into the tire until the desired PSI is reached. The gauge on the pump will show the PSI reading. A PSI of 100 is normal for a road bike. Every bike tire has a recommended PSI, and it can be found around the tire sidewall, usually 80 to 120.

Step 5

Remove the pump and retighten the bike stem valve.

Tips and Warnings

  • Road bike tires need to be checked at least weekly and pumped up.
