Probiotics is the name given to a large group of beneficial bacteria that is available in dairy products and as a dietary supplement. Probiotics are mainly found in yogurt with live cultures and fermented milk. Some of the most recognizable names of probiotics that are found in commercial food products are L. acidophilus and L. casei, according to the Dairy Council of California. "Pro" meaning good, probiotics can help a person's body fight or prevent infection by lending a hand to the beneficial bacteria already found in the body.

Alleviate Digestive Complaints

One of the most-touted benefits of probiotics is that the bacteria can help calm a restless digestive system and prevent irregularity. From gas and bloating to potentially serious cases of diarrhea or constipation, probiotics can ease and even prevent uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) reports that probiotics can ease the discomforts of diarrhea that are caused by antibiotic use and viral infections, as well as conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and colitis. The Dairy Council of California recommends 3 1/2 cups of yogurt or acidophilus milk, another source of probiotics, daily to see continued digestive benefits.

Strengthens Immune System

One of the benefits of probiotic use is a strengthening of the immune system. NCCAM explains that including probiotics in the diet is an often-used prevention tool for children who have eczema. The Dairy Council of California adds that the healthy bacteria might also ease food allergy symptoms and overall enhance the immune system because it heightens the body's response by promoting what is called the "natural kill cell activity."

Prevents Illness

Probiotic consumption may help some people stave off illness. Yeast and urinary tract infections during antibiotic use are a forgone conclusion for many women because the medications wipe out the beneficial bacteria in the genitourinary tract. Probotiocs can help restore normal fauna and can prevent the telltale signs of infection. According to NCCAM, adding more healthy bacteria to the body may lessen the risk of certain cancers, including those of the colon and bladder.
