Shooting is one of the most important aspects of playing basketball. Playing defense, ball handling and passing are key aspects of the game, but teams won't win games if they can't put the ball in the basket. Shooting is as much about the state of mind of the shooter as it is about the physical techniques of aiming, delivering and following through.
Step 1
Find the target as soon as possible. Keep your eyes focused on the front of the rim. Maintain eye contact with the front of the rim while the ball is in flight.
Step 2
Point your feet directly at the target. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart. It's best to stagger your feet so one foot is slightly in front of the other. Bend your knees you are in position to jump.
Step 3
Jump high and shoot the ball at the basket when you are at the apex of your jump. Use your opposite hand as a guide and put your shooting hand directly underneath the ball. Keep the ball in front of you. Do not take the ball behind your head.
Step 4
Point your arm, wrist and elbow in a straight line when you are finished shooting. This will help you keep the ball on line toward the basket. Many players who struggle with shooting release the ball but do not finish their shots, which creates side spin. Finish your shot.
Step 5
Start each practice session by making 40 5- to10-foot shots. These are easy shots, but it will give you a sense of confidence and help you to become a better shooter.
