Drugs for General Anxiety

General anxiety and related disorders cause feelings of uneasiness or impending danger that are difficult to shake. Constant worrying or dwelling on problems or issues to the point that patients make themselves ill are symptoms of general anxiety disorder. Mild anxiety can turn into severe depression and panic attacks if left untreated. This can lead to other health issues, such as migraines, digestive problems and breathing disorders, such as emotional or stress-induced asthma.

BuSpar

BuSpar (buspirone) is an anti-anxiety drug prescribed to help keep certain chemicals in the brain in balance. It works best when used for short periods of time, unless a physician recommends otherwise. BuSpar can be obtained only through a prescription, and its use should be monitored by a physician.
BuSpar's side effects include drowsiness, restlessness, rapid or uneven heartbeat, and trouble concentrating.

Cymbalta

Cymbalta is classified as a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI). SSNRIs increase the activity of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Cymbalta is used to treat anxiety and other mental disorders. It is also used in the treatment of fibromyalgia.
Drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, headaches and trouble concentrating are symptoms of Cymbalta. If you are taking Cymbalta and have recurring thoughts of suicide, call your physician immediately.

Xanax

Xanax is a member of the benzodiazepine class of medications. It is used to treat panic and anxiety disorders, as well as other mental health issues. It works by keeping the chemicals in the brain in balance. Xanax may be habit forming and can be obtained only by prescription. The use of Xanax should be closely monitored by a doctor.
Depression, hyperactivity, hostility, seizures and nausea are symptoms of Xanax. Report recurring thoughts of suicide while taking Xanax to your physician immediately.

Effexor

Effexor (venlafaxine) is used to treat mental disorders and anxiety and panic disorders. It belongs to the group of selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Effexor works in the brain to help the balance of naturally occurring chemicals in the brain.
Effexor's side effects include drowsiness, nausea, headaches, increased appetite and decreased sex drive.

Lexapro

Lexapro (escitalopram) is another drug classified as a SSNRI. It is used to treat panic and general anxiety disorders, as well as depression and other mental illnesses. Lexapro helps to keep the chemicals in the brain balanced and prevent severe mood swings.
Possible side effects of Lexapro include decreased sex drive, drowsiness, headache, nausea, weight changes and seizures.
