Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) is an oral prescription medication indicated for the treatment of patients with high blood pressure. Benicar works by preventing a specific body substance--angiotensin II, which is responsible for regulating blood vessel constriction--from binding its receptor. This allows your blood vessels to relax, enabling blood to flow through your body more easily. Side effects associated with Benicar use are very limited but should be discussed with your doctor if they occur.

Dizziness

The primary side effect associated with Benicar is dizziness. Benicar works by decreasing the amount of pressure the heart needs to exert in order to push blood through your body. This change in blood pressure can cause you to feel lightheaded or dizzy, especially when you stand up or sit down. Certain people may experience fainting or loss of consciousness while taking Benicar. If you feel dizzy after taking a dose of Benicar, sit down until the sensation passes to avoid further injury from falling.

Heartbeat Irregularities

This medication alters the way in which your blood vessels constrict, which may cause changes in how quickly your heart pumps blood through your body. While taking this medication, you may notice that your heart rate is slower or faster than usual. Speak with your doctor if you experience heartbeat irregularities while taking Benicar.

Allergic Reaction

Certain people who take Benicar can experience an allergic reaction to the ingredients within this medication. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop hives, breathing difficulties, oral swelling or chest tightness after taking a dose of Benicar. An allergic reaction to Benicar can be life-threatening if left untreated.
