Fish oil is frequently lauded and recommended by doctors and nutritionists for its numerous health benefits. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce the risk of heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes, slow the hardening process of the arteries and slightly decrease blood pressure. But before you buy the supplements or load up on seafood at the grocery store, take a moment to see if they are right for you.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upsets are commonly reported by people who take fish oil supplements. Many people burp more and report acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. It is common to have a fishy aftertaste. In some cases, people may experience abdominal bloating and pain. Diarrhea may also occur. Some of these side effects will be minimized if fish oil supplements are taken with meals and if the dosage gradually increases.
Decrease in Blood Coagulation
When taken in high doses, Omega-3 fatty acids can increase the risk of bleeding. Nosebleeds and bloody urine have been associated with high levels of fish oil. Extremely high intakes of fish oil has the potential to increase the risk of hemorrhagic strokes.
Environmental Contaminants
Concerns about environmental pollutants such as methylmercury, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are worth noting. Shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish contain high levels of mercury, so they should be eaten more sparingly. However, consuming a variety of fish will reduce the chances of serious contamination. Shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish are commonly eaten and low in mercury. Pregnant and nursing women should avoid eating fish. Fish oil supplements may be the best option for everyone, as they contain almost no mercury.
Reduced Blood Pressure
People with low blood pressure or who are taking medication to lower their blood pressure should be cautious in taking fish oil. Higher doses have greater negative effects.
Mania
Though rare, some people with bipolar disorder or major depression have reported feelings of restlessness and formication, the sensation of ants crawling over their skin.
