Program Description
Those who find success in recovery from drug abuse or addiction do so with the support of other people. Adequate support is a critical aspect of any recovery program, and 12-step programs have been a source of support since the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in the late 1930s. The 12 Steps of AA have been replicated in numerous other programs, which offer a method for abstaining from drug use and other addictions.
Actions
1. Obtain a schedule of 12-step meetings in your area.
2. Attend a minimum of five different meetings to determine which is most helpful to you.
3. Read the 12 steps and other related material available at the meetings.
4. Talk openly with others about your desire to stop using drugs.
5. Find a sponsor who has several years of recovery.
6. Attend 30 meetings in the first 30 days of recovery.
7. Abstain from drug use.
8. If you're unable to quit using drugs while attending 12-step meetings, seek additional professional help.
