Weight loss is often a solitary pursuit, but having the support of like-minded people can give you a boost. Several studies have shown that people who attend group meetings lose more weight than those who do not. An article in the journal "Obesity Surgery" reported a study showing that patients who had bariatric surgery lost more weight when they attended a post-operative support group. And Weight Watchers International makes the claim that people who attend meetings lose more weight than those who do not. Even with this information readily available, there are not that many commercial weight loss groups that offer meetings.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers was founded on the idea that by working together, people could lose weight. Although the eating plans have changed dramatically since it was started, weekly meetings and private weigh-ins are integral to the weight loss philosophy of Weight Watchers. Members usually pay a fee to join and then pay a weekly fee to attend meetings. Instruction is given at each meeting and weight loss success is rewarded and celebrated by members of the group.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) is a non-profit support group for people who want to lose weight. It was founded in 1948 and has chapters throughout the world. Members meet weekly for weigh-ins and support, but work with their personal physicians to set weight loss goals and create a healthy eating plan based on an exchange program. TOPS does make some recommendations about healthy eating based on research, and offers participants rewards for goals met. There is a yearly fee to join and, according to the group's website, a nominal fee for weekly meetings.

Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous is a 12-step program that helps people conquer compulsive overeating or addiction to food. There are no weigh-ins or diets suggested, but there is lots of support for dealing with food issues. You may attend as many meetings as you wish per week and there is no fee to join, but most meetings accept donations.

Hospital-based Programs

Some hospitals offer short-term weight loss groups aided by a dietitian. In general these programs require a fee, but include advice from a professional, weigh-ins to chart progress and support from both professionals and peers. Contact your hospital or physician to see if a group is offered near you.
