Breast pumps are devices used to assist a woman in extracting milk from her breasts. Besides building up a milk supply, breast pumps are utilized to relieve engorged breasts, draw out the nipple and feed multiple babies. Before you purchase a breast pump, comparing the various types will help you find the right one for you.
Types
There are three main types of breast bumps: manual, electric and battery powered. Manual pumps require that you engage the pump by hand to create suction. Battery-powered pumps use disposable batteries to start the suction process. Electric breast pumps require an electrical outlet to operate.
Features
Besides power sources, you need to compare the pumping types available. A single pump will only extract milk from a single breast at a time. A double pump can pump out milk simultaneously from both breasts. A double alternating pump can extract milk from both breasts, but suction is not applied to both breasts at the same time.
Benefits
A single manual pump can be convenient since they are portable and typically inexpensive. Manual pumps can also be used in a case of an emergency, such as when the power goes out or you run out of batteries. Double and electric breast pumps cost more, but have more features than a manual pump. You can choose different levels of suction and can often use the device hands-free.
Identification
Most manual pumps are single pumps. Battery pumps are usually single pumps as well since double pumps can drain the battery quickly. Double pumps and double alternating pumps are usually electric powered.
Considerations
When comparing breast pumps, you should think of how you plan to use the device. If you are only planning to use it on an emergency basis, a cheaper handheld version may be appropriate. However, if you are planning to go back to work and will be away from the baby for several hours, you should consider an electric version. Since pumping by hand takes longer, you may want to use an electric double pump if you need to pump in a short time frame.
